An independent guide to the museums of Budapest.

Budapest’s museums are spread across two former cities and several centuries: an encyclopaedic art collection facing Heroes’ Square, a Roman town in Óbuda, a medieval palace beneath a nineteenth-century one, and memorial sites that exist to document the twentieth century. Knowing which is worth your afternoon takes more than a list of names.

So we keep 12 museums here in full: opening hours day by day, seasonal timetables and dated closures, current adult and reduced admission, what is on show now, how long a visit takes, and how to get in with a pram, a wheelchair or children. Each museum page shows the date we last checked it against the museum’s own information.

We sell no tickets, take no commission and accept no paid placements. When something is uncertain — a timetable a museum publishes twice, differently — we say so rather than guess.

Where most visitors should begin

All 12 museums

Choose a subject

Most visitors arrive with an interest rather than a shortlist. These are the subjects Budapest genuinely does well.

Three things worth knowing before you go

Mondays are quiet

Several of the larger museums close one day a week, most often Monday. The Open Monday filter shows what is left.

Timetables change with the season

Outdoor and archaeological sites run summer and winter hours, and public holidays shift them again. Every museum page lists the dated exceptions we know of.

Prices are per museum

Admission is set by each institution, and temporary exhibitions are often ticketed separately. We show the ordinary adult price and note reductions where the museum publishes them.
